Did I Do That?

As a follow-up to this post, the Education Law Center is posting more information regarding the enrollment of students in a Pennsylvania school district.

Here's a copy of their letter to the PDE.

The Basic Education Circular (known as "Da Rulez") for Enrollment of Students is available online as well. One of the minor items it mentioned is this:

"Enrollment procedures may not require social security number, picture identification, reason for a child’s placement if not living with natural or pre-adoptive or adoptive parents, court orders, guardianship or a visa."

Oh dear...Here's a snip from the Morrisville requirements: "You will need to bring proof of identification for yourself. This must be in the form of a PA state issued I.D. card or valid PA driver’s license, passport or military I.D."

Aren't they all photo ID?

There's a lot of reading here, so I'll check back in later, but Morrisville is already violating the state regulations.

I've done the research and can confirm it was the great Al Bundy who once said in the episode in which he competes in the Senior Olympics, "It's only cheating if you get caught".

Season 7, Episode 19, Original Air Date: Sunday March 14, 1993.

Al wins, by the way.....

I feel like my civil rights have been violated.

While I find the whole re-registration frustrating, if you are going to ask for ID it seems reasonable to require one of them to be a photo id.

The state is off-base on this one.

To anonymous and anyone else who feels violated - I'm pasting again here the info posted yesterday about where you can direct a complaint regarding this. It can't hurt, and the more people they hear from, the better. It might be a good idea to contact the Education Law Center - you can find them online, especially since they are already "on the case".

Peter,

I think you will find that the State takes the least restrictive approach to civil liberties. In some religions it is not appropriate to have one's photo taken (graven images, or something like that). I believe that you may, at the time of license application, object to having your photo taken on religious and/or ethical grounds.

If the state then allows a license without photos, it must also concede that a photo ID is not required as proof of anything.
