Accountability, Part II

How can the NSNs claim with a straight face that the schools are structurally sound and well maintained. They vote against repairs. How is this being accountable or responsible?

Issue
: Capital reserve expenditures for maintenance costs for air conditioning, electrical panel and related equipment at M.R. Reiter Elementary School's upper level, school property sidewalks and for bid to air condition multi-purpose room at Grandview Elementary School

Vote: Approved 6-3 with Heater, Radosti and Worob opposed

Impact: Air conditioning, electrical panel cost: $22,500; sidewalk repair: $16,500

Some possible reasons for the vote (and many previous ones like it):

1. They don't think these (or any other) repairs are necessary;

2. They think the repairs are necessary, but don't want to pay for them;

3. They really plan to build the new K-12 school after all, or perform legitimate renovations, and don't want to spend capital money on what might be temporary repairs;

4. They're afraid of voting for anything beyond token spending, lest they piss off their base which, as they know, can get pretty pissed off and make life miserable for them;

5. They want to come off like they're tough watchdogs of the public purse, and heroes to the Morrisville taxpayer who, let's face it, is generally unaware or approving of their unsavory tactics.

My money is on 1, 4, and 5. Up to now, they knew the motion would probably still pass 6-3 anyway. But now they'll have a 7-2 majority. Place your hand on the bible and ........

I heard a student recently injured their finger pretty badly on the doors at MR Reiter that Steve Worob just deemed unworthy of replacement. I don't know if new doors would have prevented the injury, but I don't appreciate self-proclaimed experts passing themselves off as authorities on building maintenance.

Great point. Will be interesting to see how this plays out once they can no longer blame the evil majority.

Now that the Independent's website is down, for those that either missed the videos, want to see them in reruns, or share them with a friend, here are the direct links to them for your viewing, um, pleasure:

I'm re-posting in case any of you missed it the first time. This blog is the most insightful (inciteful) commentary on Morrisville I've ever read. I love it! If only there were some way of making it more publicly available to the NSN crew who probably don't know or care to learn how to access the internet. I'm having trouble visualizing Ducky ( and others) sitting in front of a computer. Anyway, keep it coming. It's bringing my heart some joy.

Speaking of repairs, I was at a parent-teacher conference at MR Reiter last week, and the classroom smelled heavily of oil exhaust from the heating system, almost as though a diesel bus was idling right into the class. It was annoying and alarming to me, and I was only in the room for 1/2 hr. Think about the students & teachers who are in there all day. It's pretty clear there's more than 1 Heater that needs fixing around here.

Jon, it's all in your head. The buildings are just *cough* fine.
