Retreat!

I received a message from Joe Kemp reporting on the Cinco de Mayo School Board Director's retreat last night. The forecast for the greater Morrisville area: continuing cloudy, thunderstorms likely with intermittent snarkiness.

[UPDATED May 7, 2008 3:30 P.M.: Thanks for the blog mention.]

Retreat was attended last night (Cinco de Mayo) by directors Radosti, Farrell, Kemp and Reithmeyer and administrators Yonson and Dunford. Dr. Barry Gallosso and Joanne Perotti of the BCIU (for free) put together a PowerPoint and had the big easels out. The goal of the retreat was to find common ground and put together a short list of short-term goals we could all agree on for the district. Since we were several apples short of a consensus tree, we amended the goal to trying to figure out if there can be any trust built up between board members and administrators. Outlook gloomy, but we're going to try to do it again with full participation. Corner me sometime for comments.

Kudos to members Radosti, Farrell, Kemp and Reithmeyer, and Yonson and Dunford. Frankenfield remains on the injured reserve list. Assign an incomplete to members Mihok, Heater, Worob, and the big enchilada himself, the Emperor.

I hereby renew the open invitation to any of the nine school board members who want to comment or contribute.

Were any reasons provided for the non-participation of Hellmann, Mihok, Heater, & Worob? Nibblin' on sponge cake? Watchin' the sun bake?

Maybe Brenda and Steve were hosting a retreat of their own? Just a few friends over, chatting casually, sipping coffee...

Let's go down to the lobby ...

Hey, I saw on a TV rebroadcast of the last board mtg. that Marlys Mihok is going to Harrisburg around May 18-19 for some board-related conference/seminar - can't remember the details, might be part of the "take some classes to learn how to be a school board member" initiative.

Anywho, Dr. Yonson said that this is a great opportunity to talk face-to-face with PA legislators, and lobby for ...well, that's just it, lobby for what? More money for Morrisville school district? Forced merger with Pennsbury? Full state takeover of Morrisville district? No property taxes for anyone over 54? HR1275 School Property Tax Elimination Act? Lethal injection for anyone who thought the new K-12 school wasn't such a bad idea?

Anyone have any thoughts on what Marlys should be lobbying for?

Forgive me if this seems harsh, but if a Board Member can't figure out their duties on their local board, what chance does such a person have in Harrisburg at getting anyone's attention? I know the idea sounds promising, but let's face the reality of who and what is being discussed here. Speaking of duty and the like, did the issue of the Treasurer's stipend ever get resolved? OR is this person keeping the money? once again demonstrating the hypocrisy of some citizens.

Obviously, some school board members treat the job as if it's a massive duty, and others don't. It stinks, but it's a fact of life.
