Green school buildings making a surge
Environmentally friendly schools can reduce energy costs ... and improve learning.

School systems nationwide are beginning to realize the benefits of "going green" when building new schools, according to experts who follow school construction trends. Though the initial building costs can run higher, schools are seeing a return on their up-front investment through a reduction in monthly energy costs. Another important (and often unexpected) side benefit has been a boost in student achievement resulting from more healthy, productive, and comfortable learning environments.

OK, so I know this is probably going to give the new school board ideas, but...

I could just hear one of those forward thinkers saying, "Green schools will save us money? Hey, that's a great idea. I think the Sears hardware down by Plaza Blvd, will probably give us a break on green paint if we buy in quantity!"

If I'm not mistaken, the new K-12 campus was going to be "green". I think it was originally planned to be certified LEED-silver, then dropped to LEED-bronze when the geothermal heating/cooling system was scrapped due to cost considerations.

Too bad the whole project is now scrapped - could have saved significant $$$ in The Long Run. But who thinks about The Long Run, unless it's the 1979 Eagles album........?

Watched part of the Dec 12 board mtg on TV last nite. Sound quality was worse than ever. Could hear the camera-operator breathing, though (gross!). Seemed highly chaotic and disorganized, not at all crisp. An unusually high number of board members got up, left the room, then came back. What up widdat? Overactive bladders?

Wonder how many will attend, at taxpayer expense, the National Conference in Orlando, Florida that Brenda Worob mentioned? The Vegas over/under is 4.

You know, I come from an industry where a "meet and greet" is a very good way to get things done. I do not necessarily frown upon trips to Orlando.

Having said that, I am required to account to my boss for my time at these functions, including my customary and reasonable expenses, and I need to report back to my boss (that's the people in the audience for the less savvy board members) what I learned and how it is applicable to my job.

Odds of that actually happening where the "people's" board members are accountable to the people: BIG FAT ZERO and falling
