Reiter Not Opening Jan 5. Modulars for Grandview

Here's an email from an elementary parent.

M.R. Reiter parents received a phone blast December 23 announcing that students are to attend school at their present assigned locations, either Grandview or the High School, when they return from vacation on January 5th. An emergency board meeting has been called for the evening of January 5th. We've heard that the board will be deciding whether or not to purchase modular classrooms to be placed on the Grandview grounds.

Nostradamus predicts...

Board decides to wait to seal the fate of Reiter before any money is spent on trailers. If ever.

Nostrildamnus predicts...

Board votes to rent trailers at Jan. 5th meeting, probably for the full 24 months shown on the trailer handout that was available to some lucky few at the 12/17 Board meeting.

Board uses trailer rental as another reason to close Reiter ("We can't re-open Reiter, we've just committed to spending a FORTUNE on trailers, and you know how we just hate to waste taxpayer money! Why it darn near killed us to:

1) blindly follow Mr. Hellmann and vote YES in Jan. 2008 to defease that bond money at a cost to taxpayers of $2.5 million. Not only that, it only leaves a total of about $4 million for renovations, which is not enough to get the job done - you're welcome!;

2) pay Wick-Fisher-White in Feb. 2008 for that $2,500 "walkthrough" study Mr. Hellmann ordered on his own without Board authorization - but hey, what are friends for?;

3) vote to pay $108,000 to replace black pipe at the Middle-High School without even testing it to see if it's still good;

4) pay Vitetta several $100,000's for renovation studies at Reiter, Grandview, and the Middle-High School that still don't answer fundamental questions about the costs and other issues associated with putting elementary kids at MSHS or more elementary kids at GV;

5) forego any possibility of getting PDE reimbursement for renovations by not following the state's PLANCON process; and

6) vote to hire an "owner's rep." for $4,800/month to oversee the implementation of our bad plans - or lack thereof)."

Board also uses trailer rental as an example of how it's listening to the community ("We hear your concerns about putting little kids in with big kids at the Middle-High School. So here, put 'em in these trailers, this is what you wanted, isn't it?").

Kicking the can 2 years down the road will take Hellmann-Mihok-Radosti et al. into early 2011, at which time they'll be gearing up for the May 2011 primary election for another round of 4-terms as School Board members - if there's still a school district.

Man, I hope Nostrildamnus is wrong.

Ah, Nostrildamnus, prodigal student of the wise N. Heimer. The nose knows!
